STEM Book Interest and Reading Study

Why are we doing this research?

We want to see if a child’s interest in a book, and their ability to choose a book to read, has an impact on how much they learn and recall from the book.

Who can be a participant in this study?

We are looking for children between the ages of 3 and 5 to participate in our study. Children participate at their preschool center, in our lab, or at the Appleton Public Library.

How long will the study take?

The study involves one session that takes around 20-30 minutes.

When and where will my child do the study?

If at a preschool, we complete testing after getting approval from the centers. Testing occurs during the time they are in school and we work with your child’s teachers to choose a time that best aligns with the classes schedule. If at our lab, we will schedule a time for you to come in based on what works best for you to complete the session. If at the library, you will sign the consent form and your child can complete the study right at the library during the time of your visit.

What will my child be doing in the study?

Your child will select which book that they would like to read out of three choices. Then, the researcher will read that book and one other book while the child is wearing eye-tracking glasses. After reading both books, your child will be asked some questions about the books they read and given a prize at the end of the session to reward them for their participation.

If you are interested in having your child participate, please fill out the consent and optional demographic and future contact form below and we will get back to you with the next steps!
