A Jewish fast in the name of Queen Esther, who played a crucial role in the deliverance of the Jews from the Persian Empire, as described in the Book of Esther.  The fast occurs on the eve of Purim, the Jewish festival that celebrates the liberation of the Jews from the Persians (purported to occur during the mid-fifth century BCE).  The fast occurs on the 13^th of Adar, from dawn to dusk.
