The Society of Jesus, whose members are commonly referred to as Jesuits, is an order of clerics in the Catholic Church founded by Pope Paul III and Ignatius of Loyola, native of the Basque country and the society’s first superior general, in 1540.  Though the founding purpose of the Jesuits was simply to serve “the greater glory of God” (expressed in the society’s motto: “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam”), during the first centuries following its founding the goal of the society was to combat Protestantism.  For this reason, the Jesuits most notably were active in the Counter-Reformation in Europe and missionary work abroad.

La Compañía de Jesús, cuyos miembros se conocen como jesuitas, es un orden de la Iglesia Católica fundado por el Papa Pablo III e Ignacio de Loyola, nativo del país vasco y el primer general de la orden, en 1540.  Aunque el propósito de la fundación de los jesuitas era simplemente servir “la mayor gloria de Dios” (expresado en el lema de la sociedad: “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam”), durante los primeros siglos después de su fundación su objetivo fue la lucha contra el protestantismo.  Por eso, los jesuitas eran activos notablemente en la Reforma Católica en Europa y en trabajos misioneros en el extranjero.
