A collection of 150 ancient Hebrew songs and poems written on various religious themes.  In the Judaic tradition the Psalms form part of the Ketuvim, or the “Writings,” together with the book of Proverbs and the book of Job, in the Tanakh.  This tradition attributes sole authorship of the Psalms to David, king of the Israelites in the tenth century BCE.  The Psalms are divided into five categories: hymns, personal songs of praise or thanksgiving, communal laments, individual laments, and songs for the King.  Jewish worship incorporates the Psalms often: in morning services, afternoon services, on festival days, and on the Sabbath.
